Whew! That was a mouth full to say..er..I mean, write.
We are going to bake bread today. The wheat kernals are being ground in the machine as I type. Oh, how I have fond memories of my mother baking beautiful brown loaves of bread! It seems like she would always time it just right so the loaves were fresh and hot out of the oven as soon as we walked through the door from a long day at school. We'd sit down at the table while she'd serve us a slice, covered in melted butter and honey.
By the time you read this, I'm sure we will have already consumed a whole loaf, but I wanted to at least start the post while little Clara was napping. I'll add the pictures this evening.
* * *
Alright...the kids are asleep for the night and I now have a moment to post the recipe and pictures of today's bread- making adventure with Avery. Here is a picture of her "talking" to the yeast. The conversation went something like this:
"Hello Beast, my name is Avery. How are you doing? Oh really? That's great!"
I tell ya...I love that girl! And don't you LOVE her little Poppy Hair Pin made by ModestMaven?! This is the one I ordered from my Valentine Lovelies post, and I enjoy wearing it as much as she does. You should buy a pair, especially since one pair costs ONLY $6.50! I've also had my eye on a very cool dress
that she makes. Anyhoo...moving on...
The yeast is bubblin' away!
While I snapped a few pictures of the bread dough, Avery thought it would be fun to taste the leftover bread flour, and ended up pouring the flour all over her head! I couldn't resist a few extra shots of her.
Well, as I predicted, one load of bread is already gone...and it was scrumptious!
Here's the recipe for this whole wheat goodness!
Great Grandma's Whole Wheat Bread
(makes 3 loaves)
Mix the following:
2 cups warm milk
2 cups warm water
3 Tbsp yeast
3/4 cup sugar or honey
When it gets bubbly, add:
1/3 cup butter or veggie oil
and
2 1/2 tsp salt
Gradually add 8-9 cups of whole wheat flour
and
One cup gluten (after 5 cups of flour add gluten)
Knead dough on floured surface until slightly sticky
Allow dough to double in size 2 times (2nd time in sprayed pans)
Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes
Brush tops with butter and ENJOY!
(**Before owning a Professional 5 qt Kitchenaid I made this recipe by hand with no problem at all! Besides, we can all use an extra workout, right?!)
I would love to hear how your bread turns out! Please let me know if you have any questions...
xoxo,
Pamela
